Hometown Diplomat Mark Rincon spent 3 days in his hometown of Baytown, Texas speaking to three high school classes, a Rotary Club, and two undergraduate and graduate school groups at the University of Texas in Austin. Mr. Rincon carried a distinct message to each group focusing on the important work the State Department does and addressing issues such as "why foreign affairs matter." Mr. Rincon discussed the Diplomatic Readiness Initiative, encouraging interest in the Foreign Service through marketing initiatives. Mr. Rincon also shared his experiences in Bogota, Colombia generating enthusiasm and interest in the lifestyle of a Foreign Service officer. "Overall this has been a rewarding experience," Mr. Rincon notes, adding, "The tangible benefits of such a program are increased interest in the Foreign Service. I only wish I had more time to speak to more people." With the enthusiasm generated by Mr. Rincon's visit, the benefits should resonate well into the future, as Mr. Rincon adds, "I look forward to maintaining contact with students and prospective employees."
